About This Site

The Heat Press Corner is written for people who make custom shirts, tumblers, mugs and tote bags at home, whether for family, church groups, school events or a small table at the craft fair. We cover the gear a beginner actually uses: flat heat presses, tumbler presses, heat transfer vinyl, heat-resistant tape and sublimation paper, with honest notes on what is easy to learn, what wastes blanks, and what holds up over time.

Heat Press Safety

Heat presses and tumbler presses run at 350 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to cause a serious burn in under a second. Keep the platen and heating element away from skin, wear heat-resistant gloves when handling pressed blanks and tumblers, and never leave a press switched on and unattended. Keep children and pets out of the work area and give the machine a stable, heat-safe surface with clear space around it.

Sublimation and some vinyls release fumes when heated. Work with a window open or a fan moving air out of the room. Mugs and tumblers stay hot well after pressing, so let them cool on a heat-safe surface before handling. Check every cord and plug for damage, avoid running a press on an overloaded extension cord, and unplug it when you are done. Always follow the manufacturer's temperature, time and pressure guidance for your specific blanks, vinyl and paper, because settings that work on one product can scorch or melt another.
